Is your family struggling with the reality it’s time to take the keys away from your parent(s)?  Do you have a friend that diagnosis that will eventually lead to them giving up their keys?  This podcast, Rock Your Retirement, podcast, Taking The Keys Away, When to Take the Keys Away from a Parent or Loved-one, is an excellent resource for starting this process.  This interview on the #RockYourRetirement Podcast is brief introductory to help someone get ready to give up their keys or having to inform someone that it’s time they give up their keys.

I encourage people to have candid conversations about “Aging, Dementia, and Driving”. I’ve been helping clients deal with this for over 15 years. Mostly, we don’t want to hurt feelings or make it more difficult for ourselves. Please don’t let your uncomfortable feelings get in the way of saving lives, protecting assets and providing peace-of-mind.

Begin with simple conversations and move forward to research, creating a plan and helping facilitate the plan.

Here are a few steps to help take the keys away:

1. Start having conversations and do your research to be prepared
2. Document all conversations, driving incidents, and the plan
3. Create a plan ensuring loved-ones can maintain their #socialcapital
4. Communication – shared calendars, email, create systems to keep the plan working & everyone’s on the same page

Please do not wait until it’s too late. It’s better to be proactive than reactive in life. You always pay more for the backend because there is more exposure to liability.

Happy Holidays to all. Please feel to reach out directly to me if you need help, resources or a copy of my PowerPoint with links to some important information.
